NICHICON CORPORATION (Kyoto, Japan) has concluded a technical assistance agreement with Toshiba Infrastructure Systems & Solutions Corporation to develop a small lithium-ion secondary battery applicable for SCiBTM. This technology is being introduced by both companies.
This new technology utilizes lithium titanate for the negative electrodes, possessing high-rate* (20 C maximum) with rapid charge/discharge performance and high-density input/output approaching that of a capacitor. It is also durable, capable of over 18,000 charges/discharges at a rate of 10 C and low temperature characteristics enabling operation even at -30 °C. Furthermore, it is a safe small lithium ion secondary battery with extremely low risk of ignition or smoking due to less lithium metal separation, which can cause short circuits and deterioration.
Leveraging our wound-product manufacturing technologies of various product types accumulated through our strength in aluminum electrolytic capacitor production, we plan to gradually introduce into the market product lineups ranging from ultra-small leads having a diameter of 3 mm and length of 7 mm, to a diameter of 12.5 mm and length of 40 mm.
Going forward, we will proactively develop product lines realizing efficient energy use to contribute to the realization of a bright future for society and the prevention of global warming.
*High-rate rapid charge/discharge: The current rate when charging/discharging battery capacity in one hour is defined as 1 C. The ability to charge at a rate larger than 1 C indicates high-rate rapid charge/discharge performance.
